About the program
Emergency Medicine at UMass Memorial.
UMass Memorial's Emergency Medicine residency trains physicians at the only Level 1 trauma center in Central Massachusetts, in academic partnership with UMass Chan Medical School. Residents get hands-on procedural exposure early, with faculty involved throughout.
Mission
Training across two different hospital systems.
Residents train at a Level 1 trauma center and rotate through a community hospital, covering high-acuity tertiary care and community-level volume. That mix is the point of splitting training across University Campus, Memorial Campus, and Milford Regional, with elective opportunities to train at many other resource-limited community sites.
History
Grown alongside UMass Memorial itself.
The program trains within UMass Memorial Health, Central Massachusetts's largest health system, and alongside UMass Chan Medical School. As UMass Memorial grew into a two-campus system with community affiliates, the residency grew with it. Residents now train across University Campus, Memorial Campus, and multiple community sites, rather than in a single department.
Residents see more than one kind of emergency department, patient population, and style of practice before graduating.
The program

Hands-on from day one
Interns get hands-on procedural exposure early, with senior residents and attendings there to teach and back them up.

High trauma volume and acuity, day to day.
14 residents per class
Mentorship carries across the full three years.
A month in Hawaii, third year
PGY3s spend a month at a community site in Hawaii, seeing emergency medicine in a different system and pace.
Fellowship-trained faculty
Faculty across ultrasound, EMS, toxicology, sports medicine, critical care, and administration, whether residents go on to fellowship or straight into practice.
After residency
Fellowships within the department.
The Department of Emergency Medicine runs its own fellowships across seven divisions, so residents who want to stay on for subspecialty training can do it within the same department.
